All Blacks winger Josevata Rokocoko is to have surgery on a wrist injury and could be out of action for up to four months.

Auckland Blues team doctor Stephen Kara said Rokocoko was not in pain but had ruptured a ligament, which could cause future long-term problems without surgery.

Rokocoko sustained the injury to his right wrist last month in a match against Australia's Western Force.

"We have consulted with the All Black medical staff throughout this process and expect that Joe will most likely be out of rugby for three to four months after his operation, which will be done later this week," Kara said.

Rokocoko, a likely selection in Graham Henry's All Blacks squad for Tests against Ireland and England in June, said he was disappointed to have his Super 14 season cut short.

"It's hard for me to leave the team and not play, especially when my wrist doesn't really hurt," he said.

"But I'm in the hands of the medical staff and the risks long-term outweigh any option to keep on playing for the short term."

The All Blacks meet Ireland in Wellington on June 7, before playing a two-test series against World Cup finalists England on June 14 in Auckland and June 21 in Christchurch.

The annual Tri-nations competition with South Africa and Australia begins on July 5 with the All Blacks hosting the World Cup winning Springboks in Wellington.
