Premier League - Wenger: Arsenal 'selling' club

Eurosport - Mon, 07 Jul 08:40:00 2008

Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal will probably have to sell their star players every year for nearly another two decades.

FOOTBALL: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger - 0

Wenger is currently trying to persuade Emmanuel Adebayor and Alexander Hleb not to follow Mathieu Flamini out of the club.

Adebayor has made it clear only a huge wage increase will persuade him to stay, but Wenger has revealed the ongoing cost of the move to the Emirates Stadium two years ago means, financially, his hands are tied.

"The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players," he told the News of the World.

"We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions - national and European - while having to free up - for 17 more years - an annual surplus of £24million to pay for our stadium.

"The club's strategy is to favour the policy of youngsters ahead of stars and to count on the collective quality of our game."

Wenger is frustrated by the financial power players have over clubs.

"If I had the power to change anything basic in football, it would be the transfer system which makes mercenaries of players," he continued

"If they are bad ones, they stay and, if they are good, they think only of leaving.

"I have fought for them to earn a very good living, but I impose respect for their contract upon them."

  1. It sounds typical business decision. The club could increase their share capital by issuing additional shares in the market. There must be millions of Arsenal supporters who would be willing to buy shares. That way the club can pay most of the financing of the stadium and indeed maybe all of it. But of course the main shareholders should be willing to dilute their holding. If they are not willing, then poor AW would have to keep on doing his magic the hard way. But with all his brilliance I doubt that he can achieve better then the 3rd place. 17 years is a long time to wait for glory just because the present directors are being money minded.

  2. arsenal do right and play a good money game as well as footy. for my sins i was born in leeds and am a leeds fan (yes yes i know you all hate leeds not heard that one before). fact is money is ripping our beloved game appart. one fat greedy wig at the top and 9 greedy up there own arses player destroyed a bloody good club now we are down in the first but all the players who coined it in stayed in the big time. one of which just signed for a club he swore never to play for after 2 lads got stabe. for me all the players are scum bags who think there better than us fans and the men at the top well there just as bad as the mp's who run our country

  4. The time has come for Russian billionaires to buy entire Premier League, including all TV rights etc and then drastically increase TV rates for Englishman, say to 5000 GBP per annum. This should recover purchase costs in a matter of one - two years. Russians ahead!!! Let's do that!!! :)

  5. Honestly, I believe Wenger, who is a legend, is trying to make a point why a takeover, by some Russian billionaire, or other rich f u c k e r might be imminent, and be vital for Arsenal.
I am sure Arsenal has enough money to buy/keep stars, I think Wenger is just being a little too dramatic here.
    Anyways, ARSENAL FOR LIFE!
    Stand up, FOR THE ARSENAL!

Wenger rules, and this season we are the champions!

  9. I have no sympathy for Wenger or Arsenal. They set out their strategy and know what they must do to execute it. If they knew they would have to sell one or two stars a year then that is what they must do. No-one asked them to build a new stadium.
And yes, they do need to pay the going rate for their players or lose them; that's what a free market is all about - one of the few that actually works for the 'workers' for a change. It would be a much better place if we all worked on contracts and were paid for ability, what we actually delivered, results and hard work. Then, perhaps, some of the larger corporate companies couldn't just treat people like numbers or assume they were locked in like semi-slaves to the corporate machine.

  10. I have no idea what Campioni is on but it certainly has no intelligence or education at the centre of it. His comments are racist of the worst type and he should lose any rights he may think are his by law. Freedon of speech comes with responsibility and accountability. I really hope his comments are traced (and they can be) and he is cut from the internet - or even better just cut off completely.
Oh, and by the way, in case anyone is in doubt, there is no way Blatter can change European employment law on how many 'foreign' nationals can play in any football side. In any case, it is a nonsense argument given that any top football side stopped representing the local town or region after the 2nd world war. Where would it stop if such prehistoric laws were re-applied. I feel it makes our football much richer and more entertaining to have such skillful and muti-cultural players and forces up the standards of British players, who have been technically defficient for years, if they wish to make it to the top. Sink or swim, survival of the fittest, etc.

  16. I red the comments that some of you people post and it is sad to know that life is still more than who we all are. i think people say things for the mere fact that a medium exist for them to do so and not because they are intelligent enough to give their views whether positive or negative in a constructive manner. we make racist comments we taunt the facts of our existence and when all that is said and done, nobody cares. we read just to satisfy our ego,we say things thinking, yeah! i just hurt somebody's feeling. nooo fool you did'nt. never in the history of n.ggadom have you ever hear abt words killing people, so the bottom line is Arsenal is the club i supported all my life and will continue even after my body fade away. we dnt care abt ManU or Chelsea.

Campioni i am a @#$% and guess what you are brainless. so brainless that you did'nt even know that being black dnt always mean you were born in Africa, but hey! someone as ignorant as you would'nt have a clue. even though, not because you are an italian makes you superior or better in fact i can whip your ass anyday both in football and in a fight so be still and get a life. the funny thing is we as black people still make the headlines and we see our selves as equal with everyone in this world. if you have'nt notice, we dnt die we multiply.

  19. I feel sorry for Arsene Wenger, he has done so much for Arsenal over the years and brought the fight to us consistently with success while other teams were one season wonders (newcastle, blackburn etc) Arsene Wenger is only stating fact, he can never compete at the top level of european football if the board keep forcing him to sell on players once they start to peak. I remember being proud of Utd's wage policy when Blackburn etc were playing platers 'extortionate' wages and Roy Keane was only earning 25k per week as utd's top earner. Even though I don't agree with the rates but since utd's wages have since gone through the roof we have continued to win but Arsenal have not. The Arsenal board should respect the shrewdness of Wenger and realise that like Fergie, if a player makes unrealistic excessive wage demands then he will most likely help them on their way out the door (ronaldo aside but don't start me on that!) Wenger would maybe pay adebayor more if he could, but if his pay demands were unrealistic then I'm sure he would tell him where to go, its the fact that he can't offer him a top prem league strikers rate that frustrates him. Arsenal need to watch out cuz if they don't get some proper investment soon for experienced players then Arsene might just show himself the door, after all, its not just players that crave success, mangers want it too!!!

And as for Campiono, please crawl back under watever hole you emerged from, your comments are barely legible you in bred illiterate prat. Your daddy must be finished with your sister by now so at least you'll have a mat to sleep on!!!
