Premier League - Mutu told to pay Chelsea £9.6m

Eurosport - Fri, 06 Jun 15:06:00 2008

A commission employed by FIFA to resolve a conflict between Chelsea and their former player Adrian Mutu has ruled that the Romanian international must pay the club 12 million euros (£9.56 million).

According to a report on the website of Mutu's current club Fiorentina, the commission ruled that Mutu must repay the Stamford Bridge club for revenues they claimed to have lost following his sacking for drugs use in 2004.

Chelsea signed Mutu for £15.8 million in the summer of 2003 but sacked him in October 2004 after he tested positive for cocaine after a drugs test.

The club estimated that the affair, which led to Mutu serving a seven-month ban, cost them £13 million in lost revenue.

Mutu, currently with the Romanian national team in Switzerland preparing for their Euro 2008 opener against France on June 9, is expected to appeal the decision, at a civil court. His lawyer told Romanian news channel Realitatea that Mutu would be doing so.

After serving his ban Mutu signed for Juventus before moving to Fiorentina where he has resurrected his career.

  2. Chelsea re jealous of Mutu now. Mutu had served his punishment for using drugs. This is as double a punishment is he was to pay chelsea. Leave Mutu alone. The revenue loss Abramovich is claiming does not worth it at all. or does he want to add to boy's money to his own Please let Mutu be and enjoy his football.

  3. Ferdinand used drugs, Man U didn't pursue him. Why must Chelsea pursue Mutu and now come back to claim money that does not worth it in any ramification. Or is it because Mutu is back on top of his career. Chelsea is being jealous. In what wisdom has the Fifa committee asked Mutu to pay Chelsea any money, or they want to share 50:50.
Leave Mutu alone Chelsea. In fact, Chelsea should be the people to pay Mutu for embarassing him. Man U played the intelligent people and hid their keep their man. Chelsea foolishly asked to go and now eating their vomit. Please all the innocent man to be.

  8. I disagree with 'Tamas V' being a footballer you are not only an ambassador for your club but you are also a role model for people to look up to. Drugs use is wrong for what ever reason. I think Chealsea are justified..they invested in him and he did not play. =)

  9. for 'Jack': I don't agree with you... He used cocain as for 'fun', not a drug to increase performance. It's like banning someone because getting drunk, or hook up a prostitute... Anyway, it was a hard lesson for him, and he learned it well, as you can see him in top form at Fiorentina.
