Hessenthaler backs Stimson's Gills

Tue 06 May, 12:30 PM

Gillingham legend Andy Hessenthaler has backed manager Mark Stimson to take the club back into League One sooner rather than later. The Gills were relegated following their defeat at Leeds on Saturday and Hessenthaler - who made more than 350 appearances for the club and was also player-manager from 2000 until 2004 - called on everyone at the club to stay positive.

Hessenthaler - now manager of Ryman League Dover - told the club's official website: "It's back to where we started 13 years ago when Tony Pulis came to the club.

"It's going to be tough for the Gills but everyone has got to stay positive and believe we can get back up in the next few years. It won't be easy and everyone has got to work hard.

"I am sure Mark Stimson has big plans for the summer and he'll know how to tackle League Two. He has tackled the Conference and been successful so let's hope the Gills can bounce back.

"It's not going to be easy but I'm convinced we will have a right good crack at it."
