Biarritz struggled to a 10-8 home win over Montauban, who came from behind and almost caused an almighty upset.
The hosts played with some fear ahead of their Heineken Cup clash with Saracens, and were only saved from by a missed drop goal late on by Tarn-et-Garonnais winger Fabien Fortassin.
The visitors left the Basque country with a bonus point but the knowledge that they could have taken so much more. Montauban fought back from 10-0 down at half time, having conceded a great try by Ashwin Willemse, the South African touching down after an excellent run from Julien Dupuy.
BO did however miss a succession of kicks and, eight minutes after the restart, a counter from Montauban saw Fortassin touch down, the video referee confirming the try.
The same man brought the guests within two points with a penalty four minutes later to give the hosts a nerve-racking final half hour.
