Wimbledon - Simon Says: Federer will win

Eurosport's tennis expert Simon Reed is predicting a humdinger of a men's final.

It was no surprise to see Roger Federer go through in straight sets in his semi. He had a terrific start to the match and ultimately Marat Safin was flattered to come away with 13 games.

Safin's on an upward path, but he needs more red-letter days like the one he had against Novak Djokovic to keep moving forward. But this tournament was a step in the right direction for him.

Rainer Schuettler was better than I expected and hung in longer than many people thought he might, but Rafael Nadal was always a step of two ahead of him.

The final is so hard to call. At the outset of the tournament I thought Federer would struggle to overcome his defeat to Nadal at Roland Garros, but he's playing superbly and I'm swaying towards him winning on Sunday.

Nadal's performance against Andy Murray has got me thinking though. He's in irresistible form. Nearly all of my colleagues in the media are backing him to do it. But I'm sticking with Federer.

Whatever happens, I think we're in for a classic final - with the rivalry between these two players at its absolute peak.

If we get some rain as forecast I think Federer will have the advantage, as he's a better player when the ball keeps low. If we go into Monday, he'll definitely win it.

  1. i was of course speaking in reference to hard courts and grass for tsonga, i beg to differ with your view that he could beat rafa on clay, the surface is just too slow for a big hitter. however big the serve etc the opponent on clay has that extra time to get in position and return and condition is so important on clay its the most brutal surface for the body and i just cant see tsonga with his huge frame going the distance with rafa in the blaring sun of a paris afternoon., who truly is the master of this surface, but hey who knows will be very interesting if they ever meet at paris.

  2. to jeffgilley thats a great point u have raised however i might add the following having watched tsonga's phenominal display(and i also wonder did u watch last years queens tournament because thats where i first noticed tsonga.) in the australian open which was awesome, and i think that had the occasion not got to him, he should have been the winner in a perfect world against djoko. in the first set of that final he played nearly as well as against rafa and djoko was being blasted off the court, after that i had the feeling the whole occasion got to him and his level dropped well below that which he had against nadal and consequently lost. in the match against rafa he came out blazing had admitedly nothing to lose and produced the best combi of serving, volleying and cross court winners i have ever seen, no joke the way he played there u had the feeling he could blow anybody off the court. to go back to queens the year before he was also showing what a talent he is in reaching i think the semis and in the process blowing his opponents off the court. he is an incredible talent but he has a weakness unfortunately which might hamper him getting to where he belongs at the top of tennis and that is his body, dont get me wrong he has a fantastic physic but not ideal for tennis and his medical history proves that. he is very tall and very thick set, muscular and relatively heavy for a tennis player and has consequently suffered many injuries in his career to date. baring injury which i hope he can sort out he would most certainly talent wise be a top 5 player, he has all the shots and the presence on court to dominate. i still however think that match against nadal was a bit of a one off perfect match because in the meantime nadal has also beaten him. but what a great talent and it would be great to see him injury free.

  3. Dr. Feelgood..to answer your question on why they made grass slower. That is to make the matches more exciting than just giving a chance to those hard-hitting servers and those who can only last a few rallies. It is to test more the ability of the players to employ tactics in longer rallies...Tennis is a mind game, you know. And you can test it better with longer rallies. And that is where Nadal's strength is. Not like Federer who can just serve and hit a few rallies. But give him a few more rallies, and he'll wilt under pressure. That's why Nadal's beaten him more times than anybody. Roger a GOAT? Don't think so.

  4. In my opinion, if there is one person that could beat Nadal on clay, it would be Jo Wilfred Tsonga. Think about it, when I watched the Australian open match between the two, Tsonga did something to Nadal almost no one has been able to do... get into Nadal's head, rattle him abit, and make him uncomfterble. Tsonga also made Nadal run, more than he had to run. If Tsonga can stay healthy and get rid of the injuries, he could be a big threat to Nadal and many other top players.

  5. In the French I saw fear in the eyes of Fed, if that fear is still there today its over. Its all mental now as Im not sure Fed really thinks he can beat this guy, deep down he has doubts, if he loses the first set he will go down in under 2 hours. Fed is in some serious trouble and to win he must play the best match of his life. Dont care who wins; tommorrow we find out who is the best player in the world, so thanks guys for taking tennis to the next level your both stars in my eyes and I hope its a classic.

  6. GO FEDERER!

  7. Federer will win. He will win by straight sets. Nadal is better on clay because of his athleticism but the ball is faster on grass and on grass, there is only one Igwe (king) and thats Roger.

  8. The writer of no. 64 is a fool. Federer is the most elegant player to watch possibly in the history of the game. His repertoire of shot is unmatched. No. 64 may prefer the "machismo" and the "showbiz" of Nadal but that is not the same as his being able to play tennis in the same league as Federer. I go for elegance vs pure "thumping" the ball. The artist against the brute? Give me the artist every time.

  9. I feel it going to be a hard game because Nadal has improved but his slow tactics is not gona work and also Federer is king of grass and this time will be able to stretch Nadal, and to attack efficiently, this time also he (federer is recovering form the lost years of Aussie open and RG) so it is a day of doom for Nadal

  10. I'm definitely cheering for Rafa to win this final. Roger Federer bores me like no other. Undoubtedly he is one of the most gifted players to play the game, but I can't stand to watch him play because I usually fall asleep. Unless he's playing Rafa or Marat Safin. And I enjoyed him getting beat by Djokovic. I think Rafa has definitely found his stride on grass. He's playing with a confidence on grass that I've never seen from him. I think this year he really has the belief that he can take it all. It's going to be a tight match, but I'm betting Rafa will prevail!!

    VAMOS RAFA!!!!!!!

  11. nothing can stop federer from winning this wimbledom. I bet with everything i have. nadal is a good player but let him bear this in mind, dat nothing can stop federer this time around, luck might run against him last time but now, NO No No. he is the winner.

  12. The finals between Federer and Nadal may not turn out to be what most people expect. Most people want to see a repeat of the 2007 final but with Nadal winning it this time around. Lightning doesn't strike at the same place twice. I wish both players good luck and may the best man win.

  13. nadal is at the pick of his game and i see a dissapointment on the cards . nadal to win against federer

From francleeds, on Sat 5 Jul 6:10PM
  14. arrogant !! I think you are mixed up with Novak Djokovic if anybody is modest than that is Nadal!! and Federer aswell ofcourse

From spanishcards, on Sat 5 Jul 6:07PM
  15. Nobody mentionned that Federer was ill from the beginning of the year. This is the only logical explanation for his performance in Australian open and Roland Garros. Now, he feels already better. If he deserves to win or not we will find it out soon.

But let's admit that he is gentleman and humble. Instead of Nadal who is arrogant (my opinion).

  17. People forget that Roger is only human and will make mistakes. There is no such thing as a perfect player. The Brazilian team are not the best team in the world.. The reason Roger never drops a set is because people are afraid of him; they never really play thier game and hence get trashed. Federer is beatable; opponents should realise that. Having said that, Nadal will win because he ain't afraid of him...lol

From melaniejhutton, on Sat 5 Jul 5:48PM
  18. Mario say that Federer should win the game, first because is No: 1, and second because he have revenge from Roland Gaross last month.
Federer it's more technique have more class then Nadal.
Good things about Nadal is that he catch the ball from every corner like Agasi
If Federer plays seriously he can win, I hope.
    We will see tomorrow.

  19. Federer should be worried Nadal is playing better than ever.

From JJ J, on Sat 5 Jul 5:25PM
  20. nadal is the most annoying player ever. takes forever to serve and takes forever to set up to return. takes forever on changeovers. he tries to play the mental game but really he's just annoying. good thing is that i haven't seen him pick his butt after every point like he used to. and why did they slow down the grass? to give nadal a better chance? i don't get it. federer has dominated more and for a longer time than anyone ever has. greatest of all time. (except maybe if borg didn't retire early.)
