Wimbledon - Simon Says: Expect the expected

Eurosport - Fri, 04 Jul 16:48:00 2008

Eurosport's tennis expert Simon Reed predicts routine progressions for the big two as the men's semi-finals take centre stage.

TENNIS Wimbledon 2008 Rafael Rafa Nadal - 0

Looking ahead to the men's semis, there's only one way I can see it going, and it culminates in a Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal final.

Marat Safin's done really well, and he played superbly against Novak Djokovic, but I just can't see him getting past Federer.

Three years ago he survived a match point when the pair played out a fantastic semi-final in Melbourne, and went on to win the Australian Open. After that he disappeared into the wilderness, but he's fought his way back.

Federer is in another league, however, and I expect him to stroll through in straight sets.

As for Nadal, he's been out of this world in this tournament. He not only gets better with every year, but with every match. His win against Andy Murray was his best performance yet.

Rainer Schuettler, meanwhile, has had the worst possible preparation in the form of a five-setter and it would truly be one of the great shocks in Wimbledon history if he won through.

The Wimbledon crowd are a little deflated after Murray's loss, but I get the feeling they're backing Nadal to win here. There's a sense of the championship needing a fresh winner and he's the man they're behind.

As for the all-Williams affair that is the women's final, I'm sticking to my guns with Serena.

She's won the previous five finals between the sisters, and seemed to step up her game during her semi-final defeat of Zheng Jie on Thursday.

Hopefully the crowd will give us a great atmosphere for the final. The last two have been pretty quiet, but I have a feeling we'll get some noise on Saturday.

  1. Maurice, you ask a question and you answer to it:)) You're such an idealist.. really.

  3. For me, i don't feel that Wimbledon quite produces the same spectacle as the French or Australian. Australia has to be my favourite because year in year out it always produces classic matches.

  5. serves are a big weapon at wimbledon and thats the way it goes, and thats why i prefer the french but a player like nadal can beat the big server as he did against karlovic at queens it is possible, now it remains to be seen if rafa can do it in the final assuming he gets there (hopefully). my money is on rafa

  7. Thank you Ralph:)

"Wimbledon is really the ugliest grand slam at all. If you serve, like Federer, the opponent can't do anything. Really boring." Yeah, this also seems to me to be correct. Not just Federrer has such a good serve and the oppenent just watch him doing that. That's what i am against this kind of play, because these players don't give other player the oportunity to play TOO! It should exist some tournament of those who give perfect serveses one after onether, to concurate who gives more many;))

  8. he choked mostly because he has a better player in front of him. Like the dutch

  9. Safin playing tennis is a bit like the Dutch playing football. When the Dutch are playing well and cohesive, they play beautiful football and appear to be able to win everything. However, as history as shown - barring one exception - they've always choked in the clutch.

With Marat it's partially the same. Of course, you may look at it differently.

  11. 2 sets down isn't good because he's never come back from 2 sets down to win in his career.

  12. Simon doesn't know what he's talking about. 'I expect Federer to STROLL through in straight sets'. Where do they get these 'know-it-all' journalists???

  13. plan back off the rails fed wins the 2nd set. marat now has a mountain to climb..........

  14. I'll be surprised if Federer wins in straight sets. Like i said before, when Safin rises to the occasion, he can definitely beat any of the top 3. If he didn't have as many injury problems and had a stronger mentality then he'd easily be a top 5 player.

  19. You are right about Federrer, indeed, but how come you didn't notice that he use to scream too!? i saw him a few time by now. Anyway, each person express in an own way and especially on the court, u cannot controlate what you feel. The reactions may be weak or strong. Everyone feels different. You like Murray much more?:) He would be number one...at screaming, making noise on the court rank:)) Nadal's more popular, let's say. All that matters are the results, their evolutions. Maybe you would scream too if you'd be a sportive...

From Pitic, on Fri 4 Jul 2:06PM
  20. roger just a little rattled here, wasted 2 challenges, the plan dare i say it is back on track, early days still but safin winning his service games easily, now he has to break and then who knows roger's unforced errors might start going up.
