Lyons Freed To Join Scarlets

Sun 04 May, 02:09 PM

Wallabies forward David Lyons is free to complete his move to Llanelli Scarlets after being released from his contract by the Australian Rugby Union.

The New South Wales Waratahs back-row had reportedly agreed a four-year deal with the Welsh region but required permission to sever his existing contract - which would not have expired until the end of 2009 - at the end of the current Super 14 season.

An ARU spokesman said: "Using our discretionary powers, we took a commercial decision to free David from his commitments in Australia from May 31.

"In making this decision, we have taken into account the interests of all parties.

"He has given wonderful service to the Waratahs and Wallabies over a long period of time and we wish him well in his endeavours in Wales."

Lyons made his Wallabies debut in 2000, has played 44 Tests and appeared in two World Cups.
