Senior Awaits Overdue Victory

Sat 03 Nov, 10:09 AM

Evergreen centre Keith Senior is hoping to experience his first Test series triumph when Great Britain move in for the kill at Hull tonight, even though it would probably hasten his international retirement.

The Leeds Rhinos stalwart, who at 30 is the oldest player in the Great Britain squad, demonstrated he still has much to offer at Test level with an impressive display in last week's 20-14 win over New Zealand.

He has not ruled out pushing for a place in England's squad for next year's World Cup but admits a first Great Britain series victory for 14 years would provide a fitting finale to his career.

"I'm going to reflect over the next two weeks," he said. "It would be nice to go out on a high. A Test series win has eluded quite a few of us over the last few years.

"I'll keep everything in my hands but it might just be a fitting way to end my international career. It's more than likely this will be my last one.

"There is still a lot of life left in the legs but sometimes you've got to think more about club as well as country."

Senior and Warrington's former St Helens favourite Martin Gleeson have held down the Great Britain centre spots for the last five years, despite the growing challenge of Hull's Kirk Yeaman.

Senior, who won the first of his 31 caps as a Sheffield Eagles player in 1996, is excited by the emergence of the 24-year-old Yeaman and believes he would be a worthy successor.

"Kirk is a good young kid who has got plenty of years left," he said. "He's going to have a big international career and I think I'll be passing the mantle onto a worthwhile player.

"He fully deserved his selection last year and put in some great performances. He's still got a lot to work on, which we all have, but he's definitely up there to take over the centre position."

Meanwhile, Senior is delighted at the recall of his Leeds team-mate Clinton Toopi to the New Zealand side for tonight's clash at the KC Stadium.

Toopi, who like Senior endured a difficult settling-in period at Headingley, came good towards the end of the domestic season and got a chance to resurrect his Test career following the injury to Bradford winger Tame Tupou.

"I'm really pleased for him," said Senior. "He's a great bloke and he had a tough time at Leeds at the beginning of the year.

"We help each other a lot. He's a great talker and we had a few chats because I went through the same thing when I first came to Leeds. He dug deep and came back strong.

"He's got some great qualities to bring into their side. He's a very dangerous player and I'm looking forward to getting some sly digs into him."
