Newcastle have signed Alan Smith from Manchester United in a £6 million deal.
The 26-year-old striker has signed a five-year-deal, adding to a formidable list of attackers at St James's Park.
The Yorkshireman links up with former Leeds team-mate Mark Viduka, while Sam Allardyce also has Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins and Shola Ameobi at his disposal.
The acquisition of Smith is likely to fuel rumours that Martins will leave the club before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
Smith passed his medical on Thursday before putting the finishing touches to a contract that could earn him £60,000 a week.
He leaves Manchester United after three difficult seasons at Old Trafford, where an ill-fated conversion into a defensive midfielder hampered his progress, while he missed nearly a year with a broken leg.
Smith showed signs of a revival in the second half of last season, playing a starring role in the 7-1 demolition of Roma in the Champions League quarter-finals.
However, with the arrival of Carlos Tevez at Old Trafford likely to be confirmed within days, Smith has been deemed surplus to requirements.
