Morrison Happy With Underdog Tag

Barry Morrison accepts he will be regarded as the underdog when he steps into the ring to face David Barnes on Friday night.

But the Scot insists he is more than capable of causing an upset in Liverpool's Everton Park Sports Centre when he attempts to win back the British light-welterweight title.

The fight comes just over a year after the 28-year-old lost his first defence against Colin Lynes in his hometown of Motherwell and Morrison is determined to steer his career back on track.

Standing between him and his hopes of reclaiming the belt is Mancunian Barnes, who won the vacant title with victory over Ted Bami in March.

"The guy has had 23 or 25 fights and he has been there and done it," admitted Morrison.

"He's fought for Commonwealth titles and has the Lonsdale belt to keep up at welterweight.

"But I'm just going to show on the night what I'm capable of."

The defeat to Lynes left Morrison pondering whether to hang up the gloves for good and his manager Tommy Gilmour would love nothing more than to see the Lanarkshire fighter back on top form.

"Hopefully he will get back on song again against Barnes," Gilmour said. "It's a huge fight for Barry.

"Barry will go in as the underdog but he is more than capable of upsetting Barnes."

Morrison may have to head south of the border in a bid to win back his status as British champion but Gilmour has no fears about a hostile crowd.

He added: "Both have been made to travel although the other fellow is from Manchester.

"Both have a wee bit of home advantage because the Liverpudlians have always been very close to the Scots.

"We'll certainly not be going into the ring with the voices shouting in the other direction and we are quite happy with that."
