Final Solution For Lions

Thu 03 Jul, 08:09 PM

The Professional Game Board have issued the British and Irish Lions with proposed solution to the fixture clash with the Guinness Premiership final.

The Lions are scheduled to open next summer's tour to South Africa against a Highveld XV on May 30 - the same day the Twickenham showpiece is due to take place.

With the Rugby Football Union initially requesting the date for the start of the tour be changed, the Lions felt it was their responsibility to resolve the issue.

It topped the agenda when the PGB met for the first time on Wednesday and chairman Martyn Thomas revealed they now waiting for a response from the Lions.

"A key item on the agenda was the issue of the Guinness Premiership fixture list and the Lions tour," he said.

"The PGB has put together a proposal for the Lions and we hope to receive their views on it in due course."

The PGB is responsible for the elite game in England and its formation arose from new eight-year agreement between the RFU and Premier Rugby, which came into effect on Tuesday.

Other items discussed were the objectives for professional rugby for the 2008-09 season, the elite player squads unveiled on Tuesday and code of conduct issues.
