Smith Prepared To Make Changes

Fri 02 Nov, 08:09 AM

Great Britain coach Tony Smith demonstrated his ruthless streak in ringing the changes for Saturday's potential Test series decider against New Zealand.

Smith carried out his threat to change a winning team by recalling Leeds duo Kevin Sinfield and Danny McGuire as well giving a surprise debut to Warrington hooker Jon Clarke.

Established international Terry Newton was the biggest casualty of the shake-up, losing his place after a below-par performance in Britain's opening 20-14 win at Huddersfield.

Clarke, the 28-year-old former Wigan and London Broncos hooker, will become the third Lions player to make his debut in the Gillette Fusion series when he runs out at Hull's KC Stadium tomorrow, when Britain have the chance to wrap up their first series victory for 14 years.

Sam Burgess and Maurie Fa'asavalu, who both made impressive debuts at the Galpharm Stadium, keep their places in the 17-man squad.

Clarke was Warrington's only ever-present this season and, after being 18th man for the mid-season Test against France, played for the Northern Union in last month's centenary international against the All Golds.

"He deserves it," said Smith. "He'll bring a new freshness and new enthusiasm.

"It sends a message that you need to be on your game, otherwise there are people waiting in the wings for your position. That's a healthy situation for us.

"I've got a few disappointed boys back at the hotel. It puts everybody on notice. The boys who get the opportunity this week know they need to perform or somebody steps into their shoes. It's a pretty powerful message."

More predictable was Smith's decision to recall Sinfield once the in-form goalkicking loose forward recovered from the stomach bug that forced his late withdrawal from the first Test team.

Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin switches to the second row in the pack re-shuffle, with Jamie Peacock moving into the front row and Burgess dropping to the bench at the expense of Jon Wilkin.

Sinfield, who was Britain's man of the match in the 42-14 over France in June, will win his 14th cap but will start only his second match for Great Britain in his specialist loose forward role.

He is also set to reclaim the goalkicking duties from his Rhinos team-mate Rob Burrow and is likely to share the hooking role with Clarke.

"It's refreshing that we've got a coaching team that's prepared to make changes and be ruthless if it needs to be," said Sinfield.

"Certainly in my time playing for Smithy, he's always had that ruthlessness about him and I think that's important as a coach"

Smith's other change was forced on him. James Roby, the Super League Man of Steel, was left out in order to spend time with his partner, who on Wednesday night gave birth six-week prematurely to a baby boy.

New Zealand have made two enforced changes after winger Tame Tupou (knee) and forward Epahalame Lauaki (calf) failed to recover from injuries sustained in the defeat at Huddersfield.

Bradford centre Shontayne Hape will move out to the wing, with Clinton Toopi, of Leeds, coming in for his 20th cap, and North Queensland hooker David Faiumu fills the vacancy on the bench.
