League Two - Shrews to wait on Hart cash

Eurosport - Wed, 02 Jul 10:31:00 2008

Shrewsbury will have to wait until former goalkeeper Joe Hart is named in England's starting XI before they benefit from a cash windfall.

2007-2008 Premier League Manchester City Joe Hart - 0

As part of the transfer which took the promising youngster to Manchester City in 2006, a clause was inserted so Shrewsbury would receive a one-off payment - believed to be in the region of £500,000 - when he made his senior debut for the national side.

Hart made his debut against Trinidad & Tobago on June 1 - replacing David James after 45 minutes - but Shrews chairman Roland Wycherley said the terms of the clause would not be triggered until he was named in the starting line-up.

In a statement issued by the League Two side, Wycherley said: "As I negotiated the deal, I was aware of it's content but I also thought it eminently sensible to contact Manchester City to discuss Joe's appearance as there had been a lot of changes there and sometimes interpretations can differ.

"Transfer agreements like this are always complex and it's seldom appropriate to spell out the detail in public. However, in this case, the speculation has been so intense that I wanted our fans to have the facts.

"Overall, we ought to be careful that this clarification doesn't take anything away from Joe's great achievement and the significant role our club has played in his career to date."
