Baggies Gera-ing up bid for Barnes

Mon 02 Jun, 02:15 PM

West Brom have reportedly lined up a bid for Derby winger Giles Barnes as they prepare for Zoltan Gera to leave The Hawthorns this summer.Hungarian wideman Gera is out of contract and is believed to have a host of offers on the table, with Everton, Bolton, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Wigan and Portuguese giants Benfica all said to be suitors.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray is resigned to losing the 29-year-old after admitting he will not improve the terms of a new contract which has been on the table at The Hawthorns for a number of months.

Mowbray already has a wealth of midfield options at his disposal, with the likes of Robert Koren, Jonathan Greening, Felipe Teixeira, Pele, James Morrison and Chris Brunt vying for starting roles.

But the Albion gaffer wants a right-sided specialist to replace the void filled by Gera, whose swash-buckling style and goals from midfield made him a firm fans' favourite during his time in the Black Country.

And Mowbray has pinpointed Rams winger Barnes, who missed most of their disastrous top-flight campaign through injury but is desperate to continue plying his trade in England's top tier.

Reports suggest Barnes, 19, has been offered a £20,000-a-week package by Albion, who would need to stump up around £5million to get their man.
