Saints, promoted back into the Guinness Premiership next season, had earmarked the giant lock as their major summer signing.

They were reportedly prepared to offer him more than £300,000 a year.

But Matfield (pictured), currently playing out a six-month contract with French second division club Toulon, has decided to rejoin the Pretoria-based Bulls in South Africa.

Matfield, who helped them land the Super 14 title in 2007, has agreed a three-year deal that could make him South Africa's highest-paid player.

"I am really looking forward to seeing my friends again at the Vodacom Bulls," said Matfield, voted man of the match in the Springboks 15-6 World Cup final win over England.

"I really missed the rugby in South Africa a lot, and to be able to join a team like the Vodacom Bulls is an absolute honour.

"I know that I need to be in a structure like the Bulls to play myself back into contention for national honours.

"I know the Bulls haven't had their best season, but I have no doubt that they will be a force again soon."
