Saints Miss Out On Signing Springbok

Fri 02 May, 12:09 PM

Northampton have failed in their attempt to sign South African World Cup winner Victor Matfield.

Saints, promoted back into the Guinness Premiership next season, had earmarked the giant lock as their major summer signing.

They were reportedly prepared to offer him more than £300,000 a year.

But Matfield, currently playing out a six-month contract with French second division club Toulon, has decided to rejoin the Pretoria-based Bulls in South Africa.

Matfield, who helped them land the Super 14 title in 2007, has agreed a three-year deal that could make him South Africa's highest-paid player.

He said: "I am really looking forward to seeing my friends again at the Vodacom Bulls.

"I really missed the rugby in South Africa a lot, and to be able to join a team like the Vodacom Bulls is an absolute honour.

"I know that I need to be in a structure like the Bulls to play myself back into contention for national honours.

"I know the Bulls haven't had their best season, but I have no doubt that they will be a force again soon."
